TRASH CITY: Pinhole Photography

Alex Skorochid
Feb 7 - 22
Gallery hours: weekends noon - 4 pm
Opening reception: Fri Feb 6th 7-9 pm

A beer can, a bit of spray paint and some electrical tape—that’s all it takes to make a camera. The cameras used to create photographs for this exhibition were made primarily from recycled/repurposed materials. Old trash becomes the basis for creating photographic images offering a view of, and conversation with the city of Victoria.

An interesting juxtaposition plays out between inexpensive materials and processes utilized and images captured in one the most expensive cities in Canada.

“A tree swaying in the breeze, the sun bursting from the clouds, the camera being jostled by an inquisitive toddler—all make the process a collaboration between myself, my equipment and the city; the resulting image only the photographic record of that process.”

In addition to photographs, solargraph cameras made from tin cans occupy space in gallery to document exposures over the course of the exhibition.
