Being Here
Open weekends 12-4 October 10th-25th, 2020
“My paintings are tools to promote the awareness of architectural space and a viewer’s presence within it. In my current work, the application of paint is wholly facilitated by the support structures themselves, ensuring all the implements of the paintings’ creation are present. In this way, each painting functions to reveal the nature of its own existence. The immediacy of a direct causal relationship of mark to its origin allow the paintings to shift from abstraction to actuality. The paintings are simultaneously recording medium and instrument; not just visual records but articulated proof of an event taken place.
Rather than the painterly signifiers of the artist’s hand, the mechanically operable support structures convey the physical interaction of a performer. The works are not meant to suspend disbelief or satisfy the expectation of pictorial painting. Instead, I am looking to uncover a meaningful realization in a viewer of confronting reality.”

Evan Locke is a Victoria BC based artist and resident with a background in the architectural industry. He has received a BFA with Honours from the University of Victoria in 2008. Over the past decade Locke has maintained a studio practice while concurrently working as an architectural designer. In 2017 he completed his Masters of Fine Arts in Studio Visual Arts, also at the University of Victoria. Locke is currently involved with the non-profit society The Ministry of Casual Living as a board member and the director of their public window gallery as well as a member of the City of Victoria’s Art in Public Places Committee.
Locke’s practice is painting-centric, however the work has increasingly been realized through three-dimensional structures depicting process and material causality. His work in the architectural field has influenced how I see art interacting spatially and how it can be used to create communicative environments.
